About project

Financial support for the Atlas of Magmatic Rocks was provided by the Cultural and Educational Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Slovak Republic, (project No. 014UK-4/2013).

Authors of the project are teachers at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, Comenius University of Bratislava, Slovakia. Scientific work of the principal coordinator of the project - assoc. Prof. Monika Huraiová, Phd. - is focused on upper mantle and lower crustal xenoliths occurring in Tertiary alkali basalts of southern Slovakia. She studies the xenoliths and the associated alkali basalts using mineralogic and petrologic methods, fluid inclusions, and accessory minerals. Scientific work of the second investigator - assoc. Prof. Martin Ondrejka, PhD. - is focused on mineralogy, petrology and accessory minerals in granitoid rocks of Western Carpathians.

The main goal of the project is building up a database of main magmatic rock types, involving descriptions on a macro- and micro-scales, main classification principles and sample calculations of chemical and normative compositions. The database should serve predominantly to petrology students, but also to a wider professional geological community. Main page of the website summarizes basic terminology magmatic rocks and detailed characteristics of selected rock types. Ambition of the authors is to bring together the basic set of magmatic rocks. Hence, any help from other petrologists is welcome. Suggestions, remarks and proposals for including new rock types can be sent to us using the contact form. Any constructive collaboration would be greatly appreciated.
